While I finalize the design on the next couple of projects, I had a few minutes for a quick shop improvement project. While I love my @harveyindustriesintl sliding table, I’ve been annoyed at the lack of easy accommodation for a zero clearance sacrificial fence. I built a few of these from scrap wood, and I’m already much happier, both with cleaner cuts, as well as fewer offcuts accumulating next to the blade. #shopimprovements #smallfixes #woodworking
After 15 months in this workshop, I finally got around to making myself a sign. Watch for it if you are traveling along westlake between downtown and Fremont, and drop me a line if you want to come by for a visit. #woodworking #customfuniture
I put the robot to work on a sign today, I’m looking forward to seeing the final result. #woodworking #customsign
I always love getting photos from clients showing how the pieces I’ve created are fitting into their homes. This client was looking for a way to use a small little niche as a part time workspace, and this sapele folding table was the solution. #woodworking #sapele #customfuniture
I’m adding a new finish option to the lineup, a water based conversion varnish from Renner. In support of that, I’m spraying a whole new set of samples for clients. #woodworking #customfurniture #finishing
We really enjoyed delivering this pair of walnut tables to their forever home yesterday. Always fun to show the finished pieces to a happy client. #woodworking #walnut #customfurniture
Custom furniture isn’t always about large pieces, it’s about designing and building the right piece for the client. I had a ton of fun building this elegant little sapele folding table for a client, It’s both light and sturdy, and should be a great fit for their needs. #woodworking #customfuniture #sapele
Old meets new in the shop today. I used the CNC machine to make a template for this pair of leg braces, but finalizing the shape with a sharp spokeshave will provide the nicest surface. #woodworking #handtools #spokeshave #sapele
Really digging the color in these live edge walnut tops. You never quite know what you are getting until that first coat of finish goes on. These are a matched set of tables, cut from the same slab from my friends at @gobywalnut
Walnut bases are looking sweet in their @rubiomonocoatusa finish. We are getting dangerously close to another completed commission. #woodworking #walnut #customfuniture
Just some shop sounds while I put the finishing touches on this pair of table bases. There is nothing like a nice sharp block plane for detail work like this. #woodworking #woodworkingasmr #shopsounds #handtools
After cleaning up with my hand planes, these walnut table bases are all glued and clamped for the night. I still need to build the drawer for the smaller table, finish the tops and lower shelves, and work through all the fine details to get these ready for use. #woodworking #walnut
Satisfying day with the hand tools today. Lots of shavings cleaning up table parts, a couple of hand cut dovetails for the small brace piece above the drawer opening, and table sides glued up in clamps for the night. #woodworking #woodworkingasmr #walnut
First look at these live edge walnut tables with the bases dry-fit together. Once the last of the fills are planed back the lovely color and grain of the tops will start to shine through. After this I take it all back apart and plane and sand the surfaces, treat the edges, and make everything all pretty. #woodworking #walnut
I put the shop robot to work today carving out some bowties for me. These can be helpful in stabilizing slabs and wide boards which might otherwise want to split. It’s also a good way to make use of material which would otherwise end up as scrap. #woodworking #cncmachining
Back in the shop today after a family vacation down to Yosemite and the redwood national park in Northern California. As someone who uses forest products in my work, visiting these majestic giants is a good reminder to continue to pay attention to the sourcing of my materials. #woodworking
Today was delivery day for the sapele nightstands, but also panel making day for the next project, this pair of live edge tables. These panels will be for the lower shelves of the tables. #woodworking #theshopneversleeps #walnut
I realize I haven’t shared many in-progress photos of this lovely pair of sapele nightstands. They were a fun engineering challenge, in addition to being fun to build. They use some of the same sapele veneers as the headboard I completed a couple months back, and will live side by side with that headboard for the same clients. #woodworking #sapele #customfurniture
Bit of a scare walking into the shop this morning to a smoky haze. I had done a fair amount of finishing last night with @rubiomonocoatusa, and let’s just say I was super happy I used the fireproof trash can for the used containers, towels, and gloves (as recommended). Did its job. Be safe out there. #woodworking #finishing #firesafety
Always fun to deliver a piece to its new forever home. This walnut entry table fits perfectly, just like we drew it up. #woodworking #walnut #customfurniture
